Goals galore in South, Central Premier Division

While Super League strikers are failing to score regularly, their counterparts in the second-tier Southern and Central Region Football associations’ premier divisions are firing on all cylinders.

Super League strikers have in the last decade failed to surpass the 18-goal mark. Ganizani Malunga, then of Bakili Bullets, last scored 28 goals in 2003 and that record stands.

However, the story is different this season in the premier divisions. Surestream Academy striker Bernard Chimaimba leads the scorers’ chart for the South on 21 goals from 32 games, trailed by Cobbe Barracks’ Macpeter Makwale’s 17 goals, one ahead of Prison United’s Lawson Chilewe’s tally.

Nyasa United midfielder Chisomo Kamlanje has netted 15 goals and is fourth on the scorers’ table followed by fifth-positioned Emmanuel Kamowa from Prison United at par with Musa Mataka of Machinga ADD.

The goals are also flowing for the Central Region where Willard Dickson of leaders Dedza Young Soccer has found the back of the net 26 times from 28 games, four ahead of Black Eagles’ Hackson Kamwera while Support Battalions’ Amos Khamula is third on 18 goals in 28 matches, one of Clement Troter for Msundwe United.

Central Region Football Association general secretary Bernard Harawa recently attributed the success of teams and players from the league to solid grounding they receive through developmental stages.

Availability of qualified coaches and less pressure enables teams to play attacking football unlike in the Super League where there is too much at stake and players are rushed into action out of clubs’ desperation.
